Homeless people are often dismissed as being drug addicted or mentally ill, so when a homeless person's deeds defy the stereotype they can often make headlines around the world.

Last year the story of an itinerant US man with golden tonsils quickly spread online after his baritone made-for-television voice was discovered by a news crew.

But he wasn't the only person to challenge deep-seated notions of what the homeless should be like.

This month a homeless man hit the headlines when he helped save the life of a baby born with her umbilical cord around her neck while earlier this year a street dweller from Texas got to keep over $70,000 that he found and handed in to police.
