New York begins clean-up in aftermath of Sandy

Residents in America's northeast have begun the laborious process of cleaning up their devastated homes and streets in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy.

The worst hit areas of New Jersey and New York have seen homes flooded, washed away and even totally destroyed.

The city that never sleeps has shuddered to a standstill, with most of the subway lines still closed after being subject to a deluge of seawater.

The power is now back on in Manhattan, but residents have a lot of work ahead of them to bring the city back to its vibrant self.
