Former world champion boxer Hector "Macho" Camacho is reportedly brain dead and in a deep coma after being shot in the head and neck.
Camacho was injured when a car he was a passenger in was shot at in Puerto Rico on Tuesday, killing the driver.
A bullet became lodged in the boxer's shoulder after entering his face, bouncing against a bone and fracturing two vertebrae.
Rafael Rodriguez Mercado of the Rio Piedras Medical Center told Puerto Rico's El Nuevo Dia that Camacho's brain had stopped functioning.
"His recovery would be a miracle," Mr Rodriguez Mercado said.
"Medically, there is nothing we can do."
Hospital director Ernesto Torres said the fighter was in a "deep coma" and his prognosis was "very poor".
In his 30-year career, Camacho went 79-6-3 with 38 knockouts and had featherweight, lightweight and welterweight titles in both the WBO and WBC.
He made headlines in recent years for drugs and alcohol abuse and domestic violence charges.
