February 03, 2013: A US shopping centre security guard who recently became a viral star for cracking down on drug deals at the mall he patrols reflects on fame.

A US shopping centre security guard who became a viral star after filming himself tasering a mother has been given close to $20,000 in donations from his online supporters.

Darren Long made headlines earlier this week after posting a video of himself tasering a woman who became violent outside Atlanta's Metro Mall.

In the shocking video Mr Long, now known as the "kick ass mall cop", warns the woman's children to stop making so much noise.

The woman then swears at Mr Long before he asks her to leave the shopping centre.

The woman refuses to move and instead begins to push Mr Long who, after a few shoves, tasers her in front of her screaming children.

The video has won the officer online fans and praise from some locals who say they are fed up with people who have no respect for the law.

News website Reddit launched an online appeal to raise money for Long after seeing the response to his story and the campaign has so far raised $20,000 for Mr Long to buy more security equipment.

Mr Long was hired to crack down on drug deals taking place at the mall he patrols and to take a zero-tolerance approach to crime.

The tough security guard says he is determined to take the hard line and he believes doing so will ultimately help his community.

"I feel like the taser and the camera are the two most effective tools that I have. Do what you're supposed to do or you get what's coming to you," he told Atlanta news station WSB-TV.

"What you do is clean up the neighborhood so other businesses can come in and downtown Atlanta can prosper."
