February 05, 2013: A humpback whale off the Hawaiian coast got a bit too close for comfort and gave several canoeists a surprise when it surfaced directly below them.

A US couple holidaying in Hawaii have filmed the moment a breaching whale bumped into their canoe as they paddled off the coast of Maui.

Laurent Lebihan was with his girlfriend and friends when a whale surfaced directly beneath their vessel in a video that was posted online on Sunday.

The tourists were taking in the views on the slowly undulating waters when an adolescent humpback whale came to the surface for a breath, startling the travellers and lifting the front end of the canoe into the air.

"We just looked around and said 'Did that really happen?'" Mr Lebihan told KHON-2.

"Good thing it was an adolescent whale and nothing bad happened," he wrote on YouTube.

The canoeists said the mammal did not appear to be injured as it swam away.
