A good Samaritan has been filmed saving a little girl from a vicious and unprovoked dog attack in the US.
The video shows the four-year-old and her mother walking down a street in New York's Bronx neighbourhood.
Suddenly a pit bull dog sprints across the road and begins mauling the girl in a ferocious and entirely unprovoked attack.
The mother clings to her child with one hand as she is spun around and around by the dog, which clamped its jaws onto the little girl.
In a heroic act, the unidentified good Samaritan runs into the frame and throws himself at the dog, pulling it away from the bloody and frightened child.
“God bless him,” a witness told ABC news.
“If it wasn’t for him who knows the girl might have been dead.”
Other people run to assist the man in restraining the dog, which keeps trying to throw itself at the child.
“Everybody came to try to protect the girl,” an unidentified rescuer told ABC News.
Then the dog’s owner appears and puts the dog on a lead.
The footage appears to show the owner gesturing to the rescuers to keep away from his dog.
Witnesses call 911 for assistance, and the girl, who was bleeding heavily and had serious injuries, was hospitalised.
Although she is in a serious condition, she is expected to recover.
The dog’s owner was later issued a summons for having a dog off the leash, NBC News reports.
