A German woman who inexplicably started growing a beard after the birth of her son 28 years ago said she now feels more sexy and confident than ever after ditching the tweezers and letting her goatee grow.
The 49-year-old, who has only been identified as Mariam, appeared on the English ITV program This Morning yesterday where she told the hosts she is comfortable with her appearance and would not get rid of her facial hair, the Daily Mail reports.
Mariam now works with a travelling circus as the bearded lady and enjoys the role which she said allows her to educate people about women with facial hair.
The mother, who also blogs about being a woman with a beard, said she has received a mix response.
"Some people say people like me should be sent to Russia or shot but that's just one person on the internet writing horrible stuff. Other people say it's courageous and inspiring. So there are both sides," Mariam said.
The goateed German said that after years of tweezing out her whiskers daily and trying to get rid of them permanently with electrolysis, she decided to let her beard grow and has not looked back since.
" 'When I decided to let it grow it didn't feel brave, it was more like a curiosity. I wanted to see what would happen to me. There was a big fear that everyone would turn away and nobody would talk to me anymore," she said.
While she did meet some resistance from family members, she said she is now comfortable with who she is and is ready to get in a relationship.
"I know myself more now," she said.
"There are always people with a fetish who might only be attracted by the beard, but that is the same with lots of things, even if I were a blonde woman," she said.
