A California club and restaurant has drawn the ire of many due to a dress code that requires women to wear heels.

A flyer for June 15 opening of Riverside club ProAbition, a Roaring 20s-themed venue, included a line that female patrons must be wearing heeled shoes to enter, the Press Enterprise reports.

"Ladies: No flat shoes or sandals. Must have heels. Exception will be made if injured," the flyer read.

The venue's Facebook page was inundated with comments deriding the dress code.

"Does this really say ladies must wear heels unless injured? This is just ignorant," Sorelle Williams, a Riverside fashion store owner wrote.

The complaints prompted a softening of the dress code, with women in flats supposedly allowed inside the venue.

ProAbition has since taken to its Facebook page to explain the rule, saying it was only for a specific event.

"Our intention was never to offend anyone. We have invested significant time and resources to create ProAbition," the post reads.

"Our goal was to cultivate and create an environment that is consistent with our vision and to promote the growth of beautiful Downtown Riverside."
