A 100-year-old grandmother has graduated from primary school in Mexico after returning to study when she was 99 years old.

Manuela Hernandez, who was born the year after World War I began in 1913, told Uno TV she had to leave school after just one year to help her poor family with household chores.

"My uncle Fernando Campos helped me get into school, but the following year, when I was able to wash and iron, they never let me go to school because they needed me to work," she said in Spanish.

The grandmother went back to school last year after her grandchildren persuaded her and she received her primary school diploma yesterday.

She has now developed a taste for study and plans to continue her education.

"The best career is education," she said.

Ms Fernandez said the only thing holding her back now was her eyesight, admitting "there are times where I need glasses to read".
