Prisoners at the Gauntanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba are reportedly huge fans of the Fifty Shades of Grey series of erotic novels.

US congressman Jim Moran toured top security facility Camp 7 with other congressional delegates last week and said the raunchy novels were more popular with the detainees than the Koran.

"Rather than the Koran, the book that is requested most by the (detainees) is Fifty Shades of Grey," he told the Huffington Post.

"They've read the entire series in English, but we were willing to translate it."

Camp 7 holds a small selection of "high value" prisoners, including five men charged with plotting the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

Mr Moran is an advocate for closing the facility.

Guantanamo has a library for prisoners but DVDs and books are usually screened for sexual content.
