Miss World 2013 opens in Bali today after Muslim protests confined the event to Indonesia's predominately Hindu island.
The event will not travel to Muslim-dominated Java after protests in the cities of Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Surabaya.
Protesters took to the streets, burning effigies of the organisers and calling them “infidels”.
Minister for people's welfare, Agung Laksono, told reporters in Jakarta that the government had “listened to what the people wanted”.
The vast majority of Indonesia practices a moderate Islam, but a loud minority had been behind the protests.
