The food chain just got flipped on its head with video showing the moment a buffalo charged, tossed and took down a lion as it attempted to kill one of its herd.
The heart-stopping scenes were filmed at the Mjejane Reserve on the border of the world famous Kruger National Park in South Africa where a group of friends were on an early morning game drive , the Daily Mail reports.
"'We had seen the two young lions on the prowl and were already quite excited to witness nature in action, but nothing could have prepared us for what we saw next," 16-year-old Oliver Mattheson, who was at the park with his father and two friends, said.
The teenager said he had witnessed two young lions stalking a small group of buffalos for about 45 minutes before one the predators finally made its move charging from the bushes and attacking a buffalo on a dirt road..
With a lion tearing into one of the herd with its sharp teeth a buffalo soldier is called into action and charges directly at the pair.
As the powerful creature closes in it lowers its head and uses its horns to throw the lion high into the air, flipping the airborne cat twice in the process.
"It was insane, he flipped the lion about five metres into the air. I had never seen anything like it," Oliver said.
Despite the heroics of the water beast the buffalo appear to have succumbed to its injuries.
"It looked like it was game over, he really looked finished," Oliver said.
Oliver's father Ian said he and his son have visited the park regularly for years and has never witnessed anything like what it.
"We really felt privileged to have witnessed such a rare occurrence," he said.
