An elderly woman in Italy has been robbed by well-dressed bandits who convinced her to part with around $2000, saying her notes had been contaminated with a deadly virus.
The Octogenarian from Conegliano in Italy's northeast said two "smartly-dressed, smiling and courteous" young women knocked at the door of her home last week, Il Mattino reports.
She said the women identified themselves as health department officials and asked the woman if she had withdrawn her monthly pension, saying that a number of banknotes in circulation were contaminated with a deadly virus.
The women then offered to take the woman's notes, promising to decontaminate and return them.
The elderly woman said she was confused and concerned by what she had heard and handed over around $2300.
The news comes amid a growing number of reports about scams that target Italy's significant and growing elderly population.
