Three teenagers aged 16 to 19 have been arrested in Hong Kong over a violent "rape video" that has been widely viewed on mobile phones and over the internet.

The video, shot with a mobile phone camera, shows a struggling 20-year-old woman apparently being raped in front of three witnesses in what appears to be a Hong Kong office.

The one-minute, 48-second clip has been circulated widely in the city of 6.9 million via mobile phones and also through a popular file-sharing program, police said.

In the film, the victim screams and tries to cover her face while an unseen female witness is heard to shout, "Call 999", the police and emergency services hotline.

Police launched raids across Hong Kong on Wednesday after complaints about the video, in which the attacker is wearing the uniform of a well-known Japanese restaurant chain.

Two of the suspects, aged 16 and 17, were arrested at their homes in Hong Kong's Tai Po district while a third suspect, 19, was arrested in the city's Shatin area, a police spokesman said.

The suspects were being questioned on Thursday and more arrests were expected, the spokesman said. Charges had yet to be laid.

The arrests follow a controversy in Hong Kong earlier this year when naked photos of pop star and actor Edison Chen and young starlets downloaded from his computer were widely distributed on the internet.

A number of people were arrested in connection with the distribution of the photos, which were allegedly downloaded from Chen's laptop when he took it to a shop for repairs.
