A Florida pair have rescued two kittens found bound in fishing line that may have been destined to become fishing bait.

The couple discovered the two cats struggling in the back of a boat in a storage yard in West Palm Beach, TV station Fox4KC reported.

The cats' feet had been bound up with fishing line so tight that their paws had swollen to three times the normal size.

It is now feared the kittens, who were close to death at the time of their rescue, will lose their legs to amputation.

Inga Hanley of the Adopt-A-Cat Foundation said kittens being used as alligator bait was "nothing new".

"There's a lot of things people do with little kittens, that's why they always tell you 'don't advertise free kittens in the paper' because a lot of horrible things happen to them," she said.

Hanley is now trying to nurse the kittens back to health.
