CCTV footage has been released showing a woman dumping a cat into a wheelie bin for no apparent reason.

A security camera owned by the cat's owners, Daryll and Stephanie Mann, captured the incident outside their home in Coventry, central west England, UK's Sky News reports.

The footage shows a grey-haired woman patting the cat before looking around to see if she is being watched.

She then picks it up by the scruff of its neck, drops it into the bin and walks away.

The cat, named Lola, was trapped in the bin for 16 hours until the owners heard its cries for help.

Mr Mann told Sky News he had initially thought a drunken person was responsible for the cruel act before he reviewed the CCTV footage and saw it was a middle-aged lady.

"I was shocked how someone could do something like that to an animal, I know some people don't like cats but you wouldn't expect them to do that to an animal that can't defend itself," he told Sky News.

The RSPCA is investigating the incident.
