Indonesian police have detained 22 migrants from Afghanistan and Iran who were trying to reach Australia.

The 21 Afghans were carrying papers from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees indicating they had been recognised as asylum seekers, though they did not have visas to travel in Indonesia.

They will be handed over to the International Organisation for Migration.

The status of the lone Iranian was not immediately clear.

Police spokesman Col Gede Sugianyar Dwiputra said authorities detained the group on Monday during a raid on Bali island after receiving a tip from Malaysia.

Indonesia, which is the world's largest archipelagic nation, has long been a transit point for people fleeing war-ravaged countries on their way to Australia.
