A New York bride faked having cancer so she could get her wedding and honeymoon for free, according to her husband.

Jessica Vega and Michael O'Connell, both 23, married earlier this year and spent their honeymoon on the Caribbean resort island of Aruba.

The wedding and holiday were paid for by donations from several strangers after Ms Vega claimed she had terminal leukemia.

But Mr O'Connell told the Times Herald-Record he now believes Ms Vega was lying about her condition in a bid to scam him and the local community.

He said that a doctor who supposedly treated Ms Vega told him that she was never his patient.

But Ms Vega denied she was lying and said it was “unhealthy” living with Mr O’Connell because he had been abusive to her.

Mr O’Connell admitted to slapping her in at least two separate incidents.

The couple has now filed for divorce.
