A man who carried his unborn twin brother in his abdomen for 30 years is recovering after the embryonic remains forced their way out of his body — through his belly button.

In a scene straight out of the movie Alien, Gavin Hyatt burst into his local doctor's surgery in agony with a bloody mystery object emerging from his stomach.

"At first I thought I had been stung by something due to the burning pain in my belly button," he was quoted by The Sun as saying.

But when he started to bleed and realised it was being caused by an object pushing out of his body, he drove himself to the surgery.

"It was like something out of Alien — I didn't believe Gavin when he said something was coming out of his belly button until I saw him," Dr Joe Santos told The Sun.

After running tests, it was confirmed the object was a parasitic twin — Mr Hyatt's identical brother who had died in the womb within the first month of their mother's pregnancy and had worked its way into the surviving sibling's tissue prior to birth.

Four doctors had previously examined the mystery lump on his belly, with most dismissing it as an ingrown hair or cyst.

Mr Hyatt now keeps the embryo in a jar at home and even refers to him as "Little Gav".

"I feel absolutely fine now but it has not sunk in yet that I could have had a twin brother," he said.

"I haven't told many people — I feel like a bit of a freak."
