A US teenager has had a lucky escape after his friends covered his hair with a flammable liquid and set it alight .

In a video of the incident, the teen leans over a bathroom sink while a friend douses his scalp in what is believed to be nail polish remover.

Another teen puts a lighter to the boy's head, causing it to ignite.

"It's on my scalp, it's on my scalp," the boy can be heard yelling, as he helplessly runs around the room while his friends laugh.

The boy begins whimpering and starts hitting his own head as the flames race up his arms. Another friend joins in to try and put the fire out.

It eventually goes out after the boy — who has not been identified — shoves his head into the toilet.

"Are you alright?" one friend asks, as the victim staggers with his head in his hands.

The cameraman can be heard saying: "That was f------ dumb dude, what were we thinking?"

The clip then cuts to the teen sometime later where he has a towel wrapped around his head and his t-shirt off.

He describes the ordeal as "way too f----- up" before pulling bandages off his neck to reveal blisters and burns. Other parts of his face do not appear to be burned.

"That's really f----- serious, why did you use nail polish remover?" the cameraman asks.

The teen replies: "I wasn't thinking".

It is not known when the video was filmed.
