A US family is outraged after a police officer tasered then shot dead their young son's dog at their home while they were at a funeral.
Cincinnati police say Jack the chihuahua-cross attacked a passing jogger after escaping from the Bullock family's backyard, then sunk his teeth into the hand of an officer trying to capture him.
Two policemen herded Jack onto the family's front porch and had the dog cornered when it allegedly bit the officer 26 times on both hands and left a tooth embedded in his flesh.
Police then tasered the 2.3kg dog before shooting it three times.
"The officers, as badly as the officer was getting bitten, he had to do something to protect himself," Lieutenant Paul Hartinger was quoted by WCOP.com as saying.
"They first chose physical means, then a taser and when those two didn't work, he had no option but to shoot the dog."
But Bullock family who returned home to find yet three bullet holes in their bloodied porch and a note asking them to contact police were not satisfied with the explanation.
"He was cornered on the porch and scared," Sharon Bullock said.
"My five-year-old cried himself to sleep the night before last, wanting his dog."
Her husband Scott asked why police hadn't called in animal welfare to control Jack.
"Two grown men that can't gather up a five-pound dog, and they're trained police officers … sounds ridiculous to me," he said.
Police say they handled the situation according to department policy.
