A man in the US has been convicted of murder after he had a sketch of the crime scene tattooed on his chest.

Anthony Garcia is facing life in prison after he was convicted on Wednesday over the shooting murder of a rival gang member at a liquor store in Pico Rivera, California.

California investigators identified the 25-year-old after they noticed a tattoo depicting the murder on his chest in a police photograph taken when he was caught driving on a suspended license.

The tattoo includes the name of the liquor store and has a helicopter spraying gunfire on the victim. Garcia's gang nickname is "Chopper".

Garcia was arrested in October 2008 and charged with murder.

Once in jail, he reportedly confessed to undercover police posing as gang members.

Deputy district attorney Brock Lunsford said Garcia's tattoo was a "non-verbal confession".

"I would never say that he's not intelligent," Mr Lunsford said.

"He was able to avoid detection for four years ... his arrogance got the better of him, not a lack of intelligence."

Garcia will be sentenced next month, ABC News reports.
