A peacock who dropped in on a panda at a Chinese zoo got chased down and killed for its trouble.

The blue peacock flew into the pen of the five-year-old male panda just before the Wuhan zoo opened.

In CCTV footage of the encounter, the panda is first seen rolling around his enclosure and splashing in his pond, unaware lunch is strutting around behind him.

The bear is next seen sprinting after the peacock, chasing it around the pen and grabbing mouthfuls of feathers before it eventually kills it.

"As you can see at the video, the panda reacted quite fast and ran at a surprising speed," zookeeper Chen Jun said.

"In spite of the general impression of being docile, panda is after all an animal. As an omnivorous animal though, giant panda sometimes eats meat."
