An American man has eaten his 25,000th Big Mac, 39 years after he tried his first one.

A ceremony was held to mark the occasion for 57-year-old Don Gorske at a Wisconsin McDonald's. The hamburger lover said he was happy to make history.

"You don't dream of living so long to reach a milestone like that," he told the Associated Press.

Mr Gorske has been told by doctors that he is in "good health" for his age, although in 2003 a nurse was concerned that his cholesterol may have been too low.

"I said: 'What do you want me to do? Eat three Big Macs a day because I usually only have two,'" he joked.

Mr Gorske usually buys six burgers on Monday and eight on Thursday and microwaves them throughout the week.

In an "obsessive compulsive thing", he tries to save all of the burger cartons as well as the receipts for each order.

"I save the account books… so if you need to look up a date and say which Big Mac did you eat on that day I can show you," Mr Gorske said.

He said he would only stop eating Big Macs if he couldn’t get them for himself.
