Princess Charlene of Monaco tried to run away to her native South Africa three times before her marriage to Prince Albert II, a French newspaper claims.

Princess Charlene, who married the prince on Saturday, even tried to seek refuge in her country's embassy during a visit to Paris in May, Le Journal du Dimanche reports.

But palace officials were unsympathetic, taking her passport from her and persuading the 33-year-old to attend the wedding.

Later in the month, she tried to flee Monaco during the Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Last week, she is said to have had her passport seized again when she tried to escape to Nice on a helicopter.

Monaco police are said to have confirmed the passport confiscation to Le Figaro newspaper.

Princess Charlene's doubts about the impending nuptials reportedly came after allegations Prince Albert has fathered at least one more illegitimate child.

Albert already has a six-year-old son from a Togolese air hostess and a 19-year-old daughter with an American real estate agent.

The new couple are said to have come to an arrangement which includes Albert undergoing DNA tests because at least one woman claims he fathered her child.

The new royal couple are due to fly to South Africa for their honeymoon on Tuesday.
