American President Barack Obama has been compared to classic '80s film character Mr Miyagi after killing a fly during a television interview.

While he sat down with CNBC journalist Robert Gibbs to discuss a serious range of topics including Iran, health care and the economy, it was Obama's lightning reaction to a pesky insect hovering around the set that dominated the headlines.

"Hey, get out of here," Obama says as he attempts to swat the fly away.

As it lands on his motionless left hand, he quickly snaps his right hand down to kill the bug as the slap echoes around the silent room.

"Nice," Gibbs says as the film crew applaud.

"Now, where were we?" Obama asks the interviewer.

"That was pretty impressive, wasn't it? I got the sucker.

"What do you think, Gibbs?"

The journalist replies that it was "very good", as the president kicks the insect away from his chair.

Media commentators have already compared Obama to a ninja and Karate Kid teacher Mr Miyagi, who famously caught flies with a pair of chopsticks.

Several videos of the incident have already proven popular on YouTube.

As the interview finishes, Obama picks the fly's remains in a tissue and leaves the room.
