Mothers' groups in the US have been slammed for serving alcohol at daytime meetings while supervising their children.

According to an interview that aired on Good Morning America, it has become common for mums to meet for cocktail gatherings and wine while watching their children play.

The trend has even seen women like Laura Deutsch start support networks that host cocktail parties for mothers with young children.

Ms Deutsch said it was unfair that mothers were being criticised for enjoying a drink together while their children play.

"You hear dads taking their kids to the baseball games and enjoying a beer with their friends, and nothing has ever been said," Ms Deutsch told Good Morning America.

"And all of a sudden, the mums who do the exact same thing, it's this whole big phenomenon."

Author Stefanie Wilder-Taylor has urged mothers to be cautious with drinking after she became an alcoholic while raising her children.

"It's mind-numbingly hard how many demands you have to raise these little human beings," she said.

"I think that if you find yourself drinking too much and you find yourself doing it repeatedly to take the edge off, I would say to monitor your behavior and try to quit."

Forty percent of mothers in the US drink to cope with stress, according to a survey done by Working Mother magazine.
