A firefighter extinguishing a blazing car in a Los Angeles street didn't flinch when it suddenly blew up in his face.

Footage of last week's incident in Wilshire Boulevard has emerged and it shows the firefighter continuing to spray the blaze with a hose as a large explosion fills the air with thick smoke.

"As they were attacking the fire, it appears from the video that an airbag went off, sending sparks," Los Angeles Fire Department Captain Jaime Moore said.

"As you can see in the video, he didn't even flinch. He took a step back and continued fighting the fire."

Moore said car fires were becoming increasingly dangerous because of changes in technology and the increasing use of flammable upholstery.

"This is something we're starting to see more of with the permutation of air bags and the permutation of stronger metals in vehicles."

The dramatic images were filmed by a person in an apartment across the road from the car.
