A New York policeman has saved his own life by jamming his ring finger between the hammer and cylinder of a gun when a suspect tried to shoot him in the stomach during a struggle.
Sergeant Michael Miller and his partner were arresting passengers in a speeding car when Eugene Graves pulled a gun on him, the New York Daily News reports.
The suspect pushed the gun into Sgt Miller's stomach but the policeman acted quickly and prevented the gun from firing by jamming the gun's trigger when he rammed his finger between the hammer, which controls the trigger, and cylinder.
Sgt Miller broke his finger in the process but was helped out by his partner, Officer William Reddin.
Graves was charged numerous offences including attempted murder of a police officer, possession of what is thought to be crack cocaine and weapons possession.
Sgt Miller, a 13-year veteran of the force, took time off to nurse his finger.
