An angry mob has assaulted an English man after footage of him allegedly beating a dog with a pole was posted on Facebook hours earlier.

A neighbour filmed the 36-year-old punching the Staffordshire bull terrier in the head and grabbing it by the neck, the Daily Mail reports.

The alleged attack took place in the backyard of the man's home in the northern England town of Grimsby while a young child seemed to egg him on.

Later, as it whimpered to be let inside the house, a woman clad in a bra and towel opened the door before slamming it in the dog's face.

Just hours after the neighbour posted the mobile phone footage online, an angry mob surrounded the man's house and assaulted him.

Police later arrested the man about ten minutes before the dog was taken to a veterinary hospital.

"This poor dog has been through a terrible ordeal and was clearly shaken when he was brought to the Blue Cross to be checked over by our vets," he said.

"There is no excuse for treating animals in this way."

The RSPCA said it has received many calls from the public over the footage and is now looking into the alleged attack.
