A Saudi family is suing a "genie" they say is stealing things from their house and throwing stones at family members when they go outside.

A report in Arabic daily Al Watan says the family, from Mahd Al Dahab, have lived in the house for 15 years but only recently came under attack.

The lawsuit, filed in the Shariah court, accuses the genie of stealing mobile phones and even sending threatening voicemails to get out of the house.

The head of the family, who declined to be named, told Al Watan said weird sounds were the first sign of trouble.

"At first we did not take it seriously, but then stranger things started to happen and the children got particularly scared when the genie started throwing stones," the man told the newspaper.

"A woman spoke to me first, and then a man — they said we should get out of the house."

BBC Middle East correspondent Sebastian Usher told the network that genies in Islamic theology were more menacing than in Westernised portrayals.

He said they were believed to be invisible but could take the form of a human or animal and could be motivated by revenge or jealousy.

The head of the local Shariah court, Sheikh Amr Al Salmi, said the case would be looked into and its truthfulness verified "despite the difficulty of its consideration".

The family has been provided with accommodation from a local charity until the matter is resolved.
