A popular teacher in Britain has been crushed to death in a rubbish truck after apparently falling asleep in a wheelie bin following a night of drinking.

The body of Scott Williams, 35, was found by staff at a waste recycling centre in Brighton, on England's south coast, shortly after the truck emptied its load.

It is believed the maths teacher and keen sportsman climbed into the bin after a long night bar-hopping with a friend.

The New Zealander was last seen at 1am. His friends reported him missing at 8am — one hour after his body was found.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said authorities were looking into how the teacher ended up in the 1.5m-high, 1.37m-wide bin.

"Police are investigating how he came to be there and are treating his death as unexplained rather than suspicious," she told the Daily Mail.

Shocked friends in London, where Williams lived and worked, paid tribute to "a lovely man and a fantastic teacher".

"It really is terrible — he was a really nice guy and was easy to get on with and was great with the kids," said one former colleague, Jacqueline Glazerman.

Another friend, Donna Kearvell, remembered Williams as a popular man who went by the nickname "Scooter".

"He was a really good swimmer and I remember hearing a story that he went to the beach and there was a swimming competition and he just entered and won it," she said.

"He then just got out of the ocean, didn't wait for any prize giving and went down to the bar with his mates."
