A naked tourist was left hanging by her ankle centimetres from the ground after falling in a hotel stairwell while having sex with her husband.

The 49-year-old British woman fell several metres and avoided hitting the marble floor after her foot became caught in a banister while on holidays on the Spanish island of Tenerife.

Police said the woman was having sex against the banister of the hotel's communal stairwell when she slipped, Spanish news site ThinkSpain reported.

The woman dangled upside down while she and her husband waited for emergency services to arrive.

Firefighters had to cut through the bars in order to free the woman, who had fractured her ankle in the fall.

"Her good luck was that getting her leg caught stopped her from falling," the Daily Mail quoted a police spokesman as saying.

"Her bad luck was that she broke her ankle, was naked and couldn't get free."

Police advised the couple to be more careful when having sex in the future.
