A young Papua New Guinean man has become the fourth person killed in State of Origin related violence in Port Moresby this year.

Adrian Joe, 23, was caught up in a drunken brawl between ethnic groups and was slashed with a bush knife after the series finale on Wednesday night.

State of Origin is a highlight of the year for many people in PNG, where rugby league is the national sport and passion for the game rivals that of Australian fans.

Last week, PNG's Prime Minister Michael Somare told parliament he was disappointed with his fellow countrymen's behaviour after the series' second game on June 24 ended with three killings in the capital.

Somare said State of Origin matches caused murder, destruction of property and outbreaks of violence across the country.

"Many times you hear wives being bashed up, TV screens smashed, big sums of money lost through bets and at the end of the day those players aren't Papua New Guinean," he said.

"Why can't we show the same enthusiasm and support when our own people are sweating it out in the field?

"If I had a say I would ban the NRL being telecast in PNG," he said.

Following the series' second game, two university students who were related to each other were killed, one of them the son of an MP, while another man died after drunken violence in the capital.

In response, PNG police confiscated cartons of beer from a 'black market' store then demolished the nearby illegal settlement where the deaths occurred.

But it's not just drunken violence after State of Origin matches that causes concern in PNG.

PNG's Business Coalition Against HIV/AIDS general manager Ann Clarke told AAP that unprotected sexual activity and sexual violence spiked during the league series.

"Local event organisers need to consider the consequences of alcohol at social gatherings, there needs to be more planning and understanding.

"We are working with local authorities to ensure adequate preparations are in place next year for people to enjoy themselves while not putting themselves at risk," she said.
