Two people have been shot dead and a gunman is still on the loose at Virginia Tech, the site of the deadliest single-person massacre in US history.

PHOTOS: Shooting puts college in lockdown

A campus police officer was shot during a traffic stop while a second person was found dead in a nearby car park.

The university is urging students to stay indoors after the shooting started at about noon local time (4am AEDT).

The shooter is described as a white male in a maroon hooded sweatshirt and grey sweatpants and is still at large.

Semester classes at the 31,000-student campus ended on Wednesday before final exams begin tomorrow.

In 2007, 32 people were killed and 25 were injured after student Seung-Hui Cho went on a rampage at the college, south of Washington DC.

Virginia Tech was fined A$54,000 by the Education Department over its handling of the 2007 massacre.

An administrative hearing over the 2007 shooting started yesterday as the college appeals the fine.

Virginia Tech now has one of the US's most advanced security alert systems, the Washington Post reported.
