A young boy who fell from a ski lift in the US was saved by a group of strangers who formed a circle on the slopes below after seeing him dangling 6m in the air.

A crowd gathered beneath the boy on Monday (AEDT) as he hung in the air for more than a minute, clutching onto his father's hand.

The lift, at the Hidden Valley Ski and Snowboard Area in Wisconsin, was halted as the dramatic rescue took place.

Matt Roeser, who was taking photos as the events unfolded, told the Daily Mail the boy was shaken up and embarrassed after landing safely but was relatively unharmed.

"The boy was lucky, rescuers got to him immediately," Mr Roeser said.

"They figured the best way to save him was for him to let go of his father's hand and they catch him."

The boy got back on the chairlift after a while and skied for the rest of the day.
