A female pro snowboarder says an airbag saved her life after she was engulfed by an avalanche on a mountain in the US state of Colorado.

Dramatic footage of the incident shows Meesh Hytner riding down a face near Snake River, in the town of Montezuma, on January 25 when a huge slab of snow breaks loose above her.

The 21-year-old is seen deploying an air bag that lets her stay upright and "float" on the surface of the avalanche slide, with her feet facing downhill.

"I felt like I was riding a mattress down the stairs," she told Backcountry Access.

She was picked up uninjured by a snowmobile.

Hytner had snowmobiled with others up the face of the mountain in order to snowmobile back down in an informal backcountry competition.

The avalanche danger was high on the day of the incident, Backcountry Access reports.
