A nine-year-old Minnesota boy has been suspended from school for performing Michael Jackson's signature crotch-grab during a fundraising lip synching concert.

Mindy Boberg said St Stanislaus Catholic School principal Pat Bowlin told her and her son Lenny that his dance to Billie Jean on Thursday constituted gross misconduct and Lenny was suspended indefinitely, the Winona Daily News reports.

Ms Boberg said her son had performed similar routines at the fundraiser twice previously and it had been approved during the rehearsals.

She said she was upset that her son had been singled out as some students had performed wearing boxer underwear and others shook their "tail feathers".

After the concert Mr Bowling sent an email to school staff and families.

"On behalf of the Winona Area Catholic Schools, I would like to thank all the students, teachers, parents, and friends of our school for your support of our Lip Sync contest," it said.

"So many people worked incredibly hard to make it a great event. We did have one act that was clearly inappropriate.

"I want to extend my apology for that situation."

Mr Bowlin declined to comment to the newspaper saying he would discuss the matter with the boy's parents on Monday.
