About 200 New Zealand protesters have formed a circle underneath the Waitangi Treaty Grounds flag pole and are attacking deep sea oil drilling and state asset sales.

The protest, which began peacefully on Monday with the group holding banners and flags on a march to the grounds in the Northland town of Paihia, upped its intensity as they arrived.

The protesters had tried to move toward the flag pole in an effort to put up the Maori flag - Tino Rangatiratanga - earlier, but a Nga Puhi kapa haka group blocked their way.

There was then a stand-off between protesters and about 20 Maori wardens who had formed a line in front of the flag pole.

Protesters in the circle were taking turns to speak in a continuing debate near the flag pole.

Issues raised include proposed deep sea oil drilling off the eastern Bay of Plenty coast and government asset sales.

The protest is led by Witana Popata, who led a small group that rushed at New Zealand Prime Minister John Key on Sunday.
