Three Indian politicians — including a minister responsible for women's issues — have resigned after being caught looking at a sexually-explicit video in state parliament.

The ministers from the morally-conservative Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party were filmed watching the clip on a mobile phone as other members of parliament debated legislation.

The footage shows a woman dance, undress and then engage in a sexual act.

"We have resigned to avoid embarrassment to our party and not give the opposition an opportunity to disrupt the assembly proceedings today," State Minister for Co-operation Laxman Savadi said.

"We were watching a clipping of an incident for a discussion on the rave parties held at St Mary's Island (on the western coast of Karnataka). It was not a porn clip."

Minister for Women and Child Development C.C. Patil and Minister for Ports, Science and Technology Krishna Palemar were the two other ministers to resign.

Mr Patel called for an investigation which he said would clear them of any wrongdoing.

Right-wing Hindu groups and the Congress party have called for the assembly to be dissolved.

"We live in a country where there already is this social mindset that women are disposable commodities and are seen as transferable properties," Congress Party member Renuka Chowdhary said.

"It really is troubling that the people who are in positions of power and have the responsibility to change things actually have the same mindset and are busy watching porn."
