A US bus driver has saved the lives of six young school children, hauling them off a bus seconds before it exploded into flames.

Lindora Richardson noticed a strange smell on her bus towards the end of her route on Wednesday and when she stopped to investigate, smoke began pouring into the driver's cabin.

The North Carolina driver pushed the students, who were aged between five and ten, to the back and helped them get out through the rear exit.

Seconds later, the bus erupted in flames.

"I'm just glad I was able to get them off safely," Ms Richardson told The Charlotte Observer.

"I think it was a little more exciting for them because it was a fire."

The fire is believed to have been caused by a faulty fan in the motor.

Ms Richardson will be honoured by the Charlotte Fire Department next week.
