Airline employees at three different US airports have surprised bored travellers waiting for their planes by suddenly breaking into choreographed dance routines.

The "impromptu" show, which was filmed and uploaded to YouTube, shows things starting out a little awkwardly with a handful of Delta staff members gathered on stage singing a song about "Delta and you".

But then things heat up with the vision cutting to surprised passengers being greeted by enthusiastic flash mobs at airports in Atlanta, New York City and Detroit.

Delta spokesperson Ashley Black told ABCNews.com the flash mob video was conceived to surprise Delta leaders, from flight attendants to executives, at a conference last week.

Black said all employee participants did so voluntarily and on their own time. She went on to say, "We hope the video shows customers what the culture at Delta is all about and that we truly love to have fun."

The video is one of several in a line of "dancing airline employee" clips that have gone viral on the web.

Last month flight attendants from Finnair made headlines after breaking into a Bollywood dance on board a flight to Delhi.
