Aussie Chris Hemsworth has missed out on the rising star award at the BAFTAs.

Actor Adam Deacon was crowned this year's rising star, ahead of Hemsworth and his Thor co-star Tom Hiddleston, Chris O'Dowd of Bridesmaids fame and My Week with Marilyn's Eddie Redmayne.

Deacon, the star of Kidulthood, described the award as "surreal".

"It's not just a win for me, it's a win for the underdog," he said, after accepting his award from Mad Men star Christina Hendricks.

The Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award is the only BAFTA gong voted for by the viewing public.
