A US Olympic swimmer stunned his girlfriend when he dropped to his knee on the medal stand and proposed to her just moments after he won gold at a swim meet.

Matt Grevers — best known for winning a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics — proposed to his US national swimming teammate Annie Chandler at the Missouri Grand Prix at the University of Missouri in Columbia on Saturday.

Video shows Chandler, 24, place the gold medal for the 100m backstroke on Grevers, 26, and walk away as the ceremony continues.

She returns to the podium and gives her boyfriend a congratulatory kiss and hug after the silver and bronze winners have left.

Grevers then drops to one knee and takes out a diamond ring, prompting the crowd of onlookers to erupt into cheers.

Chandler stands with her mouth gaping in shock for a several moments before hugging Grevers and accepting his proposal.

Grevers told journalists later he was under pressure to win first place so he could pull off the surprise proposal, the Huffington Post reports.

"If I didn't get first it wouldn't have worked so well," he said.
