A Canadian man has spent nine years digging a room-sized cavern in his basement using only toy remote-control excavators.

Cattle farmer Joe Murray, 43, started digging out the basement of his house in Saskatchewan using little bulldozers, excavators and dump trucks as a "hobby", filming his work as he went.

"It's my hobby, my escape from everyday realities, nothing more," he told the Herald Sun newspaper.

Mr Murray has posted 150 videos on YouTube showing his miniature team at work.

Some of his most popular videos have been watched more than 7,000 times.

Mr Murray said his team of toys moved about three cubic metres of soil each year.

The toys carry the dirt out of the basement via a spiral ramp Mr Murray constructed that leads through the basement window.

They then dump their loads on a growing pile of dirt outside his house.

Mr Murray said his basement will soon be finished and he plans to excavate his barn next, possibly building a pond with river channels for toy tugboats and barges.
