A US couple taking part in a kinky Valentine's Day role playing date was arrested after a witness reported seeing a naked woman with her mouth gagged and hands bound while lying in the back of a car.

Police in Portland, Oregon were notified that a witness saw a naked woman in the backseat of a blue Subaru, tied up with her duct tape over mouth, as the vehicle left a car park at a busy shopping area yesterday, FOX8 reports.

The woman who witnessed the scene and reported it said she approached the man at the wheel of the Subaru but he told her the pair was ''just having some fun''.

However, she said the woman in the back of the car ''seemed hazy'' so she called the police.

The car was tracked to Nikolas Harbar, 31.

When nine police vehicles arrived at his home they found his girlfriend Stephanie Pelzner, 26, in the back of the Subaru still naked and tied up.

Pelzner confirmed the couple was taking part in consensual role-playing as part of a Valentine's Day date but the pair was still fined for disorderly conduct.

''The concern is their actions created a pretty substantial public alarm, to the point where you have a 911 caller saying she's concerned about this person tied up naked in the back of a car,'' Lt Robert King, a police spokesman, told the Los Angeles Times.

The local public are divided about the police response, with some posting comments on the Portland Police department's Facebook page accusing the officers of over-reacting.
