Police in Florida are hunting a man caught on CCTV stealing a $6000 Rolex watch at an airport security checkpoint.

The man is seen taking his backpack and laptop from a plastic bin after passing through the metal detectors at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

The man then spots the watch and a bracelet sitting in a separate bin before surreptitiously taking it and putting it in his bag.

The jewellery was left behind by tourist Gloria de Regalado.

"He had an opportunity to do right by himself, he knew who I was and he could have redeemed himself, but he didn't," she said.

Broward County Sheriff's office is now planning to subpoena the passenger list of a flight to Charlotte, North Carolina, on suspicion that the thief boarded that flight.

There is also a US$1000 (A$934) reward for his capture.
