Foreign prisoners including the 12 Australians being held at Kerobokan jail in Bali could be evacuated as tensions inside the prison remain at a flashpoint.

The option of evacuating foreigners has been raised in the wake of a second night of tension inside the jail following a riot on Tuesday night that saw prisoners gain control of the facility for about seven hours.

Authorities were on Thursday in a tense standoff with a group of prisoners after the inmates again took control of the jail overnight.

On Tuesday night, prisoners went on a rampage, trashing cells and burning offices near the entrance to the jail, before about 100 heavily-armed riot police moved in to take control of the facility.

The riot police were forced to retreat to the outside of the prison again on Wednesday night.

Kerobokan governor Bowo Nariwono has confirmed that the evacuation of foreign prisoners is being considered.

It is understood the evacuation could take place at 1pm local time (4pm AEDT).

"There's a plan to make them safe," Nariwono told AAP on Thursday.

He said, however, that no final decision had been made.

It is unclear where the prisoners would be evacuated to.

The overcrowded jail houses more than 1000 male and female inmates, including the Gold Coast's Schapelle Corby and members of the so-called Bali Nine drug trafficking group.

One of the Australian prisoners, Graeme Michael Pollock, was due to be sentenced on Thursday in relation to drugs charges. His hearing has now been postponed.

It's understood Indonesian security Forces backed by water cannons and armoured vehicles remain locked in a tense standoff outside the prison.

"The prisoners took over the prison again, which forced security personnel to fire warning shots into the air," provincial military command spokesman Wing Handoko told AFP.
