Metallica has joined the increasingly desperate search for a US student who was last seen at one of the band's concerts six days ago.

Morgan Dana Harrington, 20, has not been seen since she became separated from friends at the metal band's concert in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday night.

As police continue to probe hundreds of potential clues, Metallica has thrown their celebrity behind a publicity campaign being spearheaded by Ms Harrington's family and thousands of people online.

"We are deeply concerned about the disappearance of 20 year-old Virginia Tech student Morgan Dana Harrington, who was last seen while attending our concert at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, VA, on Saturday night," a statement on Metallica's website reads.

"We encourage anyone who has any information regarding Morgan's disappearance to please come forward."

Almost 10,000 people have joined a Facebook group called 'Help find Morgan Dana Harrington', which contains hundreds of messages from people offering help and support.

The student's parents Dan and Gil Harrington are circulating their own message, said to be an old family favourite, which reads simply: "(I love you too much) … (forever) … (and once more)".

The pleas come as Virginia Police confirmed they still have no evidence Ms Harrington has been the victim of any crime.

"At this point, we don't have anything to indicate that foul play was involved, although we don't have anything to say it's not," police spokeswoman Corinne Geller told Fox News.

"We're treating this as a criminal investigation only because that's the way we need to go into this to make sure we've got every base covered."

The missing student's mother told media the family was doing its best to stay calm.

"I’d like to go upstairs and hide under the duvet right now and tell the world to go away," she said.

"But we have to be strong right now and keep doing whatever we can do just like we want her to be strong and do what she can do."

Mr Harrington said his daughter had always been very open with the family and did not keep secrets.
