A meteor that crashed in South Africa lit up the sky but despite the stunning event being caught on camera, astronomers can't find where it landed.

CCTV footage showed the meteor flying through the sky over Johannesburg on Saturday night with a green flash before appearing to explode in an orange ball of flames.

Claire Flanagan of the Johannesburg Planetarium told The Sun said witnesses were lucky to see the event.

"Everyday we have rocks hitting us but the thing is they mostly happen over the ocean or where nobody is living or at two in the morning or at midday when nobody can see them," she said.

Despite being seen by potentially hundreds of witnesses and being caught on numerous security cameras, scientists are still yet to find where the meteor landed.

"If footage from enough security cameras is available, it could possibly be used to work out where the meteor came from, how fast it was travelling, how high it was, and where it ended up," Dr Flanagan said.

Despite meteors having potential market value, the rock automatically belongs to the state according to South African law.
